MentallyIll Woman Delivers Baby At Rubbish Dump

                       

For four years, she was known to wander the street of Badejo Kalesanwo, Oduduwa Community, in Mushin Local Government Area Lagos State.

 She slept on the road, ate from bins and went about in tatters.

 Some months ago, people saw her with a protruding belly and dismissed it as fibroid growth.

 However, on the morning of December 25, 2013 the unknown mad woman, who identified herself to PUNCH Metro as Amudatulai, a native of Ibadan in Oyo State, went into labour and self-delivered a baby girl as residents watched in awe.

 Eyewitnesses said she immediately named the baby girl Mariam Olorundamilare Odunayo (Olorundamilare, means God has given me the victory, while Odunayo means, the year of Joy).

 A resident, who identified herself simply as Mama Adoyo, said Amudatulai delivered the baby by the dump site situated along the newly-tarred road.

 She said, “I have known her for a long time. She used to sit and sleep on that road. When we saw her protruding stomach, we didn’t know she was pregnant. We thought it was fibroid. But around 6am on Wednesday, she was crying and screaming my name and other people’s names in the area because we play with her a lot.

 “I later moved close to her and when I saw it was labour pains, I asked her to let us go to the hospital, but she said no, insisting that she could see people bathing her baby, whereas she had not delivered by that time.

 “I kept my eyes on her as she was screaming. Suddenly, the baby came out. We didn’t know on time, but a driver who was passing by called our attention that we should move closer to her because she had given birth.

 “We had to quickly call a nurse who came to cut the placenta. The nurse later injected her and cleaned her up.”

 Mama Adoyo said one of the community leaders donated money to assist in buying some materials, as other people in the neighbourhood trooped out with old and new clothes for the mother and child.

 A female worker with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Mrs. Modupe Salami, who cleans the street, told our correspondent that although Amudatulai still raved after the delivery of the baby, she was generally well behaved and could be rescued with a good medical help.

 PUNCH Metro learnt that a man who claimed to be a brother of the new mother had been calling some of the residents on the telephone to keep an eye on Amudatulai, adding that he would come to take her back to Ibadan.

 The said brother was also said to have claimed that Amudatulai had three other children in Ibadan.

 A community leader, Alhaji Babatunde Shittu, appealed for the intervention of relevant government agencies before an imposter took advantage of the situation.

 Shittu said, “I must say that we all are concerned as to how she came about the pregnancy. We don’t even know where she came from since she came here four years ago. Government should take care of both the mother and the child. There is no way you can compare someone who is sane with someone who is not. Again, she is homeless and needs good accommodation. People are only guessing that her family members are coming. If this lady has good medical care, she will be normal.”

Our correspondent observed on Friday that she was being sheltered along with her baby in a shop on the street.

The dimly-lit wooden structure had a mattress and a mosquito net for the new baby.

Our correspondent also observed as excited residents gathered round the shelter to catch a glimpse of the baby and give her money.

Our correspondent asked Amudatulai how she felt about her new baby, and the attention she was getting.

She said, “I am so happy today. I know my portion is joy in this Lagos. And my joy will not end…” At this point, she began to rave and abuse a woman beside her, asking for papers to show ownership of an unidentified portion of land.

Police Smash Gun-Running Syndicate In Kaduna

Seven suspected members of a gun-running syndicate allegedly involved in the sale, manufacture and repair of locally made guns have been arrested by the police in Kaduna State.

They were paraded yesterday in Kaduna by Police Commissioner Olufemi Adenaike, who said that the suspected gun-runners were arrested following a tip-off from a member of the public.

The suspects include the village head of Sabon Gidan, Kakau, in Chikun Local Government Area of the state, Aliyu Yahaya.

Investigation is still on, according to Mr. Adenaike with a view to arresting other members of the syndicate and others involved in the manufacture and repair of locally made guns.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he urged the public to continue to support security agents by providing them with useful information that would aid efforts to safeguard the state against terrorism and other crimes.

Speaking to newsmen, Yahaya, who was accused of harbouring some of the suspects and being in illegal possession of guns, confessed his complicity in the crime, saying that he regretted his action.

The village head said that he bought the gun from Mohammed Shuaibu for N150, 000 to enable him to protect his household against the menace of armed robbers and assailants.

He said that Shuaibu told him that the gun was licensed, adding that he paid him half of the price with a pledge to pay the balance when all the gun’s registration documents were given to him.

Yahaya advised the public against engaging in criminal acts or possession of arms, irrespective of the circumstances.

He stressed that people should rather report anything that could breach the peace and security of the society to security agencies.

Also speaking, Shuaibu (45) confessed that some years ago, the police arrested him in connection with illegal possession of arms.

He said that he had jettisoned the gunrunning business for over two and a half years before Yahaya contacted him to procure a gun for him.

He said that he usually bought guns from his tailor, Mohammed Abdullahi.

Abdullahi (55) said that he had been in the gunrunning business for sometime; adding that he usually purchased guns from a Nigerien (now at large) for subsequent sales to his customers.

He attributed his involvement in the crime to economic hardship, saying that he had three wives, 21 children and nine grandchildren, left behind by his deceased son, to cater for.

Important tips for parents On How To Protect Their Kids

                         

Below are some guiding rules for parents as you care and protect your children.

1. Your child needs to know vital information from as early as age three that will help them and others if they are ever lost or missing. That information includes their first and last name, their phone number including area code, their street address, town, parish and country. They will also need to know how to call for help using 119 on a telephone.

2. Children must be able to identify their body parts. Help your child identify their private parts using the correct terminology. Be sure to identify breasts, vagina, penis, and buttocks. Your child must also know that these are private areas that their bathing suit covers. Explain that only mommy or daddy may touch them in a certain way, or while being groomed or being examined by a doctor with mom or dad present.
3. Check first. Young children do not have the capacity to make sound decisions about their personal safety. The check-first rule is based on the premise that adults or older children should not be giving children gifts, offering them rides or coercing them into their home or car, for any reason without checking with their mom, dad or a guardian first. Children must check first before accepting a gift or going anywhere with anyone, even if that person is someone known to them.
4. We all have that feeling inside that tells us what feels right and what feels wrong or uncomfortable. You must teach your child to trust and honour their inner voice or that ‘gut’ feeling. When you feel uncomfortable, do you trust that feeling and take action?
5. Listen to your children and encourage open communication. When a child’s feelings are continually cast aside, the child learns that the alarm inside of them is unimportant, so they eventually begin to disregard it altogether. This muffling of their inner alarm makes them more vulnerable to sexual predators who are masters at selecting children who have been taught not to communicate.
6. Some parents believe that they can teach good secrets and bad secrets. A child should not be expected to keep any secret at all. Simply explain to your child that secrets are against the rules. If you tell your child that there are good secrets and bad secrets, then you are giving them the responsibility of deciding whether or not they should keep a secret or tell, a responsibility they may not be ready to handle. The no-secret rule eliminates this problem and models healthy boundaries. You shouldn’t be telling your child something that needs to be kept secret in the first place.
7. Have your child practise screaming “NO!” and telling when someone does or says something that doesn’t feel okay.

Crocodile Caught in Lagos Posh Estate

It is rare to find wild animals roaming free in neighborhoods, so Omole estate in Lagos was recently thrown into a state of excitement when a crocodile was caught in the gated neighborhood.

The animal, which residents described as “very large”, became a spectacle at one of the gates to the estate, on Sunday, December 22, 2013. For residents not used to seeing wild animals lurking in their neighborhoods, the sight was unexpected.

The animal had earlier been caught by the estate’s security operatives around 2am on Omotunde Akinsola Street, by Today’s Car, after it strayed from a swampland at one end of the neighbourhood. Three bullets shot at the animal did not kill it.

So the initial buzz of excitement generated by the incident soon turned to apprehension for residents. Some of them described the crocodile which was over six feet long, as frightening.

A resident living by the swamp where the animal was caught, who identified herself as Ogechi, said she heard three gunshots that morning, and had thought they were meant to scare away robbers.

“Now, there is a general fear in the area caused by the incident. It’s amazing finding such a wild animal around where people are living; I think it’s very dangerous because a crocodile should not be going about in a neighbourhood,” she said.

Since the incident though, the neighbourhood has had its fair share of wild tales and gossips. Different accounts of the incident with varying sizes of the animal have been rendered from mouth to mouth in the estate that the facts have been blurred somewhere between the lines.

TRAGEDY: 2 Kids Burnt To Death On New Year's Day

Two children were burnt to death on new year night when a candle light razed their parents’ home at 12, Adebari Street, Agege, Lagos State.

The deceased kids were identified as Nosirat, 7, a primary one pupil of Starland Private School, Agege, while Basit, 5, was in nursery one of the same school.

In a statement made available to policemen attached to Elere Divisional Headquarters, Agege, the mother of the deceased  children identified as Mama Nosirat, explained how the tragedy occurred.

The Federal Ministry of Justice To Spend N181.3m On Clothing!

The Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters will spend the sum of N181.3m on uniforms and other garments in 2014, according to the budget estimates submitted to the National Assembly by Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

A copy of the proposed budget of the headquarters of the justice ministry, which was obtained by our correspondent, revealed that the sum of N181, 391,000 was allocated for “uniforms and other clothing” in 2014.

The sum is part of the total N4.7bn allocated to the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters in the 2014 budget proposal.

However, the nature of the “uniforms and other clothing” was not disclosed.

The ministry is to spend the sum of N1.3bn on legal services in the New Year, while N1.4bn is allocated for consulting and professional services.

Travels, including local and foreign trips, formed a substantial part of the ministry’s proposed budget.

The sum of N362.6m has been budgeted for travels and transport (general).

Local travel and transport (training) and local travel and transport (others) will cost N76.7m and N142.3m, respectively.

In the same vein, international travel and transport (training), and international travel and transport (others), will cost N34.9m and N108.5m respectively.

The sum of N371.7m was budgeted for materials and supplies (general).

Also, the sum of N59.4m was set aside for foreign grants and contributions, as well as grants to foreign international organisations.

The proposed budget suggests that the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters intends to upgrade its security system as the purchase of security equipment as well as improvement of ministry security system would cost N40m, respectively.

The same N40m is equally budgeted for the rehabilitation and repair of office buildings, while the sum of N19.8m is provided for maintenance of office building and residential quarters.

Other sums allocated for maintenance works include N9.9m for maintenance of plants/generators; N27.7m for cleaning/fumigation services; and N59.1m for general maintenance of motor vehicle/transport equipment.

The proposed budget also reveals that the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters will spend the sum of N55.8m on fuel and lubricants.

Motor vehicle fuel will cost the sum of N24.7m, while plant/generator fuel costs the sum of N28.3m.

N7.8m is provided for refreshment and meals.

Also, the sum of N56.9m is earmarked for a baseline survey of justice institutions, while the sum of N16.5m is budgeted for ICT consulting.

The proposed budget further shows that the ministry budgets the sum of N37.2m for utilities (general).
